Greymouth Fly Fishing Guide

Greymouth fly fishing guide offers both fishing and accommodation. The town is only 32 miles away from our home, and we are also available to collect you from the railway station or your hotel, for daily or multi-day excursions. Originally nicknamed as "Crescent City" due to its sprawling layout along a bend in the river, is the largest of the three major West Coast towns.  Nowadays, tourism is almost the only growth industry around and few people know the location better than your Greymouth fly fishing guide.

Shantytown TranzAlpine Train to Greymouth
The West Coast region is rich in history, and the legends of discovery and exploration. Wild and rugged, clad in forests, encompassing all or part of 5 National Parks, it also includes many State forests and Scenic Reserves.
Pancake Rocks, at Punakaiki... at Paparoa National Park, 1 hrs drive.

Water is the dominant element, with rivers and lakes abounding. Our personalised tours can show you views few other tourist will ever see, secret little corners steeped in history. Try your luck with a gold pan at a site swarming with eager prospectors in the 1860's. Walk through prehistoric forest, listen to the native birds. Stand on the edge of a lake  untouched by time. If you appreciate sincere service, dislike organising the vacation logistics, hate buses, or driving on the wrong side of the road, and struggle to read a map, we will be glad to help you out! And you'll be pleased you asked us!

The population is around 10,000 people. There is a good shopping area, with excellent locally produced pottery and jade carving available, a selection of supermarkets, a number of restaurants and some fine hotels. A central High School serves the local region, and there is also a Polytechnic Institute. Once a thriving port exporting coal and timber, the Grey River bar is now crossed predominantly by a fleet of commercial fishing boats. Gold is still a significant contributor to the local economy, with many gold claims still in active operation. At Ngahere, just a few mile north, the largest gold dredge in the southern hemisphere can be seen at work. Major tourist attractions include Shantytown - the West Coast Historical Society's gold mining museum, and Paparoa National Park, in which the famous "Pancake Rocks" and spectacular blowholes are located. Fishing, hunting, kayaking and boating are very popular pastimes here.
