A major port of entry during
the gold rushes of the 1860's and 1870's, the dreaded bar at the mouth of the
Hokitika_River claimed many ships, and many lives. At its peak, the port was
exceptionally busy. One famous photograph of those times shows some 40 sailing
ships berthed at the wharf! Nowadays, its a busy little town, bustling
with tourists. There are some excellent craft stores, glass-blowing displays and
shops, jade carving studios, and a shop specialising in jewelry fashioned from
genuine gold nuggets! A number of hotels and motels provide a range of
accommodation.
A multitude of lakes and rivers provide water sports aplenty.
The main highway south to the Haast Pass is studded with beautiful, unspoiled
lakes, surrounded in prehistoric forests, untouched since the dawn of time. The
fishing and hunting are good, with access to the Southern Alps at the back door
of the town. Some 2.5 hours to the south are the renowned Fox & Franz Joseph
glaciers, major tourist drawcards! Scenic helicopter or aircraft flights around,
and onto the glaciers are popular pastimes. Guided walks right up the glaciers
are provided by specialist guide companies. Wildlife abounds in the region to
the south, including seal colonies, the white heron sanctuary, and the
