West Coast Fly Fishing Guide New Zealand

West Coast fly fishing guide available, South Island, New Zealand. Land of rainforests, National Parks, lakes, glaciers, rivers and native birds. Pillaged and plundered by gold miners, timber milling and coal miners. Through it all, its rugged beauty has endured. No anglers visit would be complete without spending time with a West Coast fly fishing guide.

The West Coast region extends from Karamea in the north, to Jackson's Bay in the south, and is some 600 kms long. Long and narrow, averaging 20 - 100 kms wide, it is 77% clad in native rain forest, making it the most heavily forested regions in New Zealand. Exposed to the prevailing westerly winds, with the Southern Alps as a backdrop, it experiences very high rainfalls, increasing the further south you go. The central Lake Brunner region has some 10 inches of rain per year, and Fiordland exceeds 400 inches, making it one of the wettest place on the planet!

All that water means superb trout fishing! Brown trout inhabit every creek, river and lake, and attain huge sizes in this remote and rugged region.

The history runs deep here, both European and Maori have their share of legends and stories of adventure and survival. The early explorers faced immense tests of courage and endurance. The Maori came, found greenstone ( jade) and could not stay away. The Europeans found gold in unimaginable quantities. Those who stayed on after the gold rushes of the a860's and 1870's became saw-millers, farmers or coal miners.   Here, we share a glimpse of the contrasts so abundant here. Shantytown above, is the local Historical & Mechanical Society's gold mining museum. It is a "real" village, in the sense that all the buildings are relics from one or other of the many ghost towns that dot the landscape. A "must see" attraction for all visitors, it provides a window into the past. Railways have been an important part of development here, and the TranzAlpine train trip from Christchurch to Greymouth and return is renowned internationally as one of the great train journeys. The crossing through the Southern Alps is truly spectacular in winter, as the photo above hints.

We offer you a chance to experience not just the fishing, and modern day attractions, but those of yesteryear. Because we grew up in this region, we know the secret little corners where history remains concealed. We enjoy sharing those locations with our guests, explaining the history, the flora and the fauna of the region. Our personalised tours, and our great service combine to give you an unforgettable experience. It would be our privilege and our pleasure to assist with your vacation.
