One Week Block Fly Fishing Courses

These courses will be run during the summer of 2004 and we are taking bookings now on a first in, first served basis. Participant numbers will be limited.

Start Dates: 7 Jan 2004 & 26 Jan 2004   Venue: West Coast South Island  Duration: 1 Week    

 

Course Cost: NZ$1225 per person 

Accom & Meals: e.g. NOT included in course costs 

Option 1: 8 nights homestay accommodation  & all meals NZ$800 

Option 2: 8 nights local pub/hotel accommodation  NZ320 + meals

 

 

Day 1 - Arrival afternoon - Individual assessment

Each participant will be interviewed to assess his/her particular requirements of the course. We are intent on ensuring that everyone leaves a much better fisherman than when they arrived, and it is important to determine at the outset each individual’s specific needs.

 

Day 2 - Fly Casting Part I

Introduction – presenters, and then participants to introduce him/herself in turn, and briefly outline their fishing background, their home waters and 

reason for participation.

  • The Dynamics - how & why it works

  • Form in Fly CastingGrip, Hand & arm position, The Wrist

  • Q & A session

  • Roll Cast Demonstration, class participation

  • Off-Shoulder Cast Demonstration, class participation

  • The Basic Fly Cast

    • Demonstrate Pick up and lay down cast, class participation.

    • Practice, plus combine with roll cast pick-up

  • False Cast Demonstrated, False Cast – class participation

    • Practice, plus combine with roll cast pick-up

  • The Basic Fly Cast continued

  • Off-shoulder cast demonstration

    • Off-shoulder Cast – class participation

  • The Line Hand Demonstration, class participation

  • Shooting Line Demonstrated, class participation

Day 3 - Stillwater Fishing Basics - Reading the water, Entomology

  • Where to Fish, & Why – Reading the Water

  • What do Trout Eat & When – Stillwater Entomology

  • Difficulties – wading noise and wake

  • Glare - picking locations to suit conditions

  • Setting Traps – how to target sighted fish

  • Water Temperatures - impact of rising temperatures on fish

  • Spring Vs Summer - Conditions & Variables

 

Day 4 - Equipment Maintenance, Safety

  • Rods, Reels, Lines 

  • River crossings - do's and don'ts

  • Safety - hats, glasses, sun block, insect repellent

  • Hook extraction techniques

 

Day 5 - Rivercraft Basics Part I - Reading the water, entomology

  • Where to Fish, & Why – Reading the Water

  • Fish your feet first

  • Weather - understanding the barometer

  • Floods - and the opportunities presented

  • Trout Migration – whitebait & sea-run browns etc

  • What do Trout Eat & When – River & Stream Entomology

  • Concentrating on the best water only - and skipping the empty water

 

Day 6 - Rivercraft Basics Part II - Fishing with Confidence, Sight Fishing

  • Stealth - do's and don'ts - stalking techniques, clothing

  • Sight Fishing - how to see fish

  • Casting to sighted fish - sun position, water droplets, judging distance

  • Out-waiting wary fish – and the law of diminishing returns

 

Day 7 - Flycasting Part II

  • Speed & Accuracy

  • Wind – How to deal with it, and to use it to good effect

  • Side Cast

  • Special Casts – Reach Mend, Serpentine, Pile & Stack

  • Distance – Roll Casts, and Aerial Casts

  • Double Haul, Triple Haul

 

Day 8 - Rivercraft Basics Part III - Field Trip, Multiple Locations

  • Leaders & Tippets – tapered, knotted, X?, lengths, flourocarbon

  • Rigs - how and why to make selections

  • Knots - the ones you need to know – Practice as you will fight, for you will fight as you have practiced!

  • Flexibility - be prepared to change rigs at any time

  • Drag - Why, How & When to Mend Line

  • Techniques - Dry, Nymph, Wets, & Streamers – and the best time to use each
