Angling Report: May 2004 Lake Brunner Fly Fishing Report

1st - 2nd May

The main fishing season closes 30th April, and Duck Season commences on the 1st Saturday in May - and in 2004 that was 1st May. A dull, drizzly day, with the occasional gust from the north-east, and the trout in apathetic mood due to a fall in barometric pressure.

Sporadic gunfire echoes and ripples around the mountains from time to time, and guests Tom Schnitker and Francois Rozon cast in rhythm as we cruise the shoreline of Lake Brunner's Iveagh Bay in search of the wily brown trout. The boys were feeling a little pale, something to do with not exiting the bar until 3am, I believe... probably explains why they slept in....

Victory to the persistent.... 2 of the 5 landed on 1st of May in difficult conditions. The next morning the boys landed a fish apiece before heading for the airport immediately after lunch.

Living off the land - smoked trout for lunch.

10th - 14th May

Max Ng dropped by for another visit, this time with his younger brother Boon. Max was here with girlfriend May last winter, and the weather was marginally better this time around - mild temperatures and misty rain for the first 3 days.

Max with a nice Lake Haupiri trout on Day 1

Little brother Boon with a nice Lake Brunner trout on Day 2.

A side excursion up the Taipo River for a 4WD experience

Max with his best ever trout - 2kgs. The 4th day was spent on the Grey River, with a dozen fish landed for the day. No day fishing is complete without a feast afterwards - the boys enjoyed the spicy chicken noodle soup!
